Violet Sky: een lucht in magische tinten

Vraag een kind om een lucht te tekenen en het kind pakt direct een blauwe stift. Lucht is in onze gedachten onlosmakelijk verbonden met de kleur blauw. Op zich niet gek, want zo zien we haar het meest.

Maar de lucht is ook zwart, wit of grijs. Of geel, oranje, rood en zelfs groen. En soms kleurt ze magisch roze of paars. Dit gebeurt niet midden op de dag, maar bij zonsondergang of -opkomst. Deze verkleuring komt het hele jaar door voor, maar we zien haar het meest wanneer de dagen korter zijn. Simpelweg omdat we dan wakker zijn tijdens zonsondergang en -opkomst.

Violet Sky: a sky in magical hues

Ask a child to draw the sky and they will immediately reach for a blue crayon. In our minds, the sky is inseparably linked to the colour blue. Which makes perfect sense, since that is how we see it most of the time.

But the sky can also be black, white or grey. Or yellow, orange, red and even green. And sometimes it turns a magical pink or purple. This does not happen in the middle of the day, but at sunset or sunrise. This colour change occurs throughout the year, but we notice it most when the days grow shorter — simply because we are awake during sunrise and sunset.
